Learn about our Medical Review Board Carly Snyder, MD on November 12, 2019 Holiday loneliness is a common experience. Heres how to effectively cope and enjoy the holidays more this year. Johner Images/Getty Images More in Stress Management Situational Stress Effects on Health Management Techniques Job Stress Household Stress Relationship Stress The holiday season is generally thought of as a time of joy and love, but for far too many people, itâs a time of loneliness. Some people live far from family and miss seeing their loved ones this time of year; others dread going to holiday parties and New Yearâs Eve celebrations without a partner and end up staying home. Itâs also common for people to feel emotional distance from the people theyâre with, thus feeling lonely even if theyâre in a room full of people. For those who feel a sense of loneliness, holidays can be a time of additional stress, including those like Valentines Day or even Independence Day. The following suggestions can help. Be Good To Yourself While this may not completely erase feelings of loneliness, taking special care of yourself can help you to feel better and enjoy your solitude more. Whether you take a relaxing bath and give yourself spa treatments, curl up with a good book, enjoy a hobby, or learn something new. Taking time to do things that will enhance your self-esteem or at least give you a good dose of fun will not only take your focus off of feeling alone, but it can lift your spirits as well. Understand That Youâre Not Alone While you may be feeling alone in your life right now, knowing that the holidays can be a lonely time for many people may help you to feel less so. In our online poll, over half of respondents said they usually feel loneliness over the holidays, and only a small percentage said they never do. Many people wish they could be with family, but canât; others mourn the relationships with family that they wish they had, that they see others enjoying during the holidays season. Likewise, many people long for closer connections with friends, or wish for a supportive romantic relationship, and find themselves feeling isolated during the holidays. While it may be uncomfortable to feel lonely, itâs also OK to feel this way. Talking to others who may share your feelings (either via the internet or in real life) can help you to feel less alone in your situation. Rethink Your Expectations Part of why holidays feel more lonely for many people is that our society has high expectations for this time of year. The absence of a romantic partner or a close family rarely seems more uncomfortable than during this flurry of expected social activity when weâre all supposed to be going to parties and exchanging gifts and enjoying jolly feelings with loved ones. One way to deal with the feelings of loneliness is to re-think your expectations. Realize that few peopleâs lifestyles truly measure up to âmovie standardsâ of perfect living, and shift your focus to all the great things you do have in your life. Social media can create significant amounts of stress in this area. Realizing that its just fine to take a good friend (instead of the perfect date) to a holiday party, or that the flawed love of a difficult family member still counts as love, has helped many people feel less lonely. Get Connected You may feel lonely when surrounded by people, but itâs harder to feel lonely when youâre reaching out to them. Whether youâre saying hello to neighbors youâre usually too rushed to acknowledge, exchanging friendly words with people at the office, or picking up the phone and calling an old friend you havenât spoken to in a while, reaching out to people and strengthening bonds can help you feel more connected and less lonely. This may be a time to message people over social media whose statuses you usually simply like, and catch up on old friendships. How to Cultivate Social Support Cultivate Gratitude There are many far-reaching benefits to gratitude. One easy antidote to feelings of lack is to cultivate feelings of gratitude for what you already have; its hard to focus on both at once. If youre feeling a lack of love in your life, make a concerted effort to focus on the love that you do have--from friends, family, neighbors, and even pets. You can also focus on things you really value in your life, like your work, the hobbies you have, or even your potential. Maintaining a gratitude journal can be a wonderful exercise in cultivating an attitude of gratitude, and can leave you with a written record of everything you have to value in your life, to read through when youre feeling down. Give to Others One particularly meaningful way to feel less lonely during the holidays is to donate your time to a cause you believe in. Helping others who are less fortunate than you can fill you with feelings of love and pride, remind you of all you have to be grateful for, and even connect you with others who share your passion. Youâll be part of something larger than yourself, and youâll be immersing yourself in the true spirit of the holiday season. Helping Others Can Increase Happiness and Reduce Stress Examine Your Feelings This one probably wonât make you feel better immediately, but if you feel lonely much of the time, this may be a cue that some changes are in order for the coming year. You may want to examine whatâs behind your feelings of loneliness, either on your own or with the help of a therapist. Would you benefit from putting more time into your social life so that you have stronger relationships? Is something inside of you causing you to keep people at a distance? If youâd like to deepen your friendships, it can cost a little extra time and energy, but the payoff is having increased support and feelings of being heard and understood. Making time for friends, truly listening when your friends talk, and being there for them are all ways to build supportive friendships. How to Create Truly Supportive Friendships for Stress Relief A Word From Verywell If you feel burdened by feelings of loneliness or feel them throughout the year and find it difficult to deal with, you can also talk to a professional about how you feel; this can often be more helpful than people expect.

Intersection of Media and Culture On Her Own Ground Thesis Examples
Thesis statement On Her Own Ground by Madam C. J. Walker, is not just a form of entertainment, it is an accurate record of the life and times of one of Americaââ¬â¢s most inspirational figures.à As an African American, Walker had to work ten times as hard to make her name in spite of the adversity she faced as a black woman, living in the late 19th Century.à Overcoming tremendous odds, C. J. Walkerââ¬â¢s story is the definitive ââ¬Ërags to richesââ¬â¢ tale, much loved by the American public: born to enslaved parents, orphaned at a young age; married and widowed before the age of twenty, and died with her name attached to a small fortune: hers is the American tale of ââ¬Ëthe land of opportunity.ââ¬â¢Ã The biography of C. J. Walker addresses the culture through a rousing, inspirational tale of one womanââ¬â¢s aspiration to defy her critics. My thesis will argue that this biographical work blurs the boundaries between ââ¬Ëentertainmentââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëreal lifeââ¬â¢ by allowing the reader to both enjoy and critically appreciate Walkerââ¬â¢s struggle towards success and its comment on our culture.à It is a comment on the culture of the patriarchal, Caucasian-centric America of that time: the slave trade and the disregard of women as being anything other than mothers and wives meant that black women were considered worthless.à My discussion will center on the way that a book, which is, fundamentally, an object of entertainment, can also be a resource for accessing a culture gone past and assessing our own culture, by comparison. Introduction Entertainment and culture are often thought of as being linked but wholly separate entities but in some cases, that simply is not true.à On Her Own Ground is the biography of African American, female entrepreneur and philanthropist, Madam C. J. Walker; it is an entertaining read which also informs the reader of the culture and attitudes of America in the late 18th Century.à Born into a world where her fate as a slave was already pre-ordained, Walker defied the odds by creating the hugely successful company, Madam C. J. Walker Manufacturing Company, who specialized in hair and beauty products specifically designed for black women.à Her company alone is demonstrative of Walkerââ¬â¢s defiance toward the limitations which society placed upon her.à Born to slave parents and orphaned by the age of seven, many would have written her off as either dying young or being restrained by a life in slavery.à However, her indefatigable resolve and lust for life allowed her to becom e one of Americaââ¬â¢s most distinctive and significant figures of the last two-hundred years.à Her biography allows the reader to explore a culture of constraints and limitations which prevented many from every finding that they had a dream, much less achieving it.à It blurs the lines between entertainment and cultural comment by examining Walkerââ¬â¢s life through the eyes of her great-great-Granddaughter, Aââ¬â¢Leila Bundles.à The purpose of this thesis is to discuss just how this work of great American literature manages to both entertain and shame modern day readers through its stirring recount of Walkerââ¬â¢s life and culture as a slave-come-entrepreneur. Shikhar Giri Professor Sinclair History-1302 07 January, 2017 Final Assignment 1. How and why did FDR and the New Deal fundamentally transform America? In your answer, consider the changes related to business, farmers, laborers, minorities, and politics. What were the limits of the New Deal? What was its legacy? The New Deal was a movement of undertakings, including, most noticeably, Government managed savings, that were built up in the Unified States in the region of 1933 and 1938, and a couple that came later. They included both laws pass by Congress and presidential authority demands in the midst of the essential term (1933ââ¬â1937) of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Defined by the Eisenhower association, the domino speculation stipulated that if one country yielded to communism, the enveloping countries certainly would fall as well. Consequently, the United States tremendously extended its manual for the Republic of Vietnam. At, in any case, American staff

Edgar Degas was both a man and an artist of contradictions. The French artist, paint err, and sculptor Edgar Degas was born on July 19, 1834 in Paris, France. Degas died September 27, 1917 in Paris, France. We will write a custom essay sample on Edgar Degas Research or any similar topic only for you Order Now Degas is associated historically with the Impressionists because of his concentration on scenes of contemporary life and he never painted outdoors and rarely depicted landscape and also his desire to capture the transitory moment. Degas surpassed other impressionists in compositional sense; his use of vibrant expressive color became his primary concern in his late works. Degas was one of the first to understand and creatively use the new pictorial possibilities offered by photography and Japanese prints. With that being said, in describing the physical characteristics of one of Degasââ¬â¢s most famous still life paintings, was titled ââ¬Å"Woman with Chrysanthemumsâ⬠, painted in the year 1865. The medium used was oil on canvas and the scale was 29â⬠x 361/2â⬠. The subject is a female figure depicted sitting at the right side of a table with a bouquet of flowers in the center and also a glass pitcher of water with gloves placed beside the glass pitcher. The painting is objective, and it is because the huge bouquet of flowers opens the viewerââ¬â¢s eye and draws one into the still life painting dominating almost overshadowing the figure. As an artist Degas utilized several major elements of art in his still life famous painting, ââ¬Å"Woman with Chrysanthemumsâ⬠, therefore, one of the major elements utilized was use Lines. Degas utilized lines in his painting of the table and the open window at the right side of the painting. A second element of art utilized in this painting was the use Color. Degas uses bright spots of color in the bouquet, yellow, red, and specifically white, mostly the general coloring of the painting was subdued, with shades of brown being the predominate coloring. Degas utilized a third element of art being Space. Degas captured the look of Japanese prints and influenced Degasââ¬â¢s painting, as Japanese also is the shallowness of the space, accented by the flowered wallpaper to the left of the picture. A fourth major element utilized in Degasââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Woman with Chrysanthemumsâ⬠described is use Mass. The artist utilized mass with the fullness of the massive bouquet of flowers. Degas utilized the element of texture brilliantly in his rendering of the colorful bouquet of mums. In describing how Degas organized the elements with the principles of design, firstly, unity and variety is utilized with the consistency of color throughout the painting. The mass bouquet of flowers dominates the center, the flowered wall paper behind the table and the flowers that are seen through the open window on the right of the painting. Utilizing another one of the elements of art and principles of design, Degas utilized Balance in this particular painting. Degas placed the woman figure at the far right where she occupies less than a third of the composition, her body cut in half by the pictureââ¬â¢s edge. The mass of flowers dominates the center, and the glass pitcher and the ladyââ¬â¢s gloves casually tossed on the table, help to balance the composition, which in turn acts as a visual foil to the figure. Emphasis is utilized in the painting as Degas captured the visual appearance, an impression of the inner mood of the woman staring off in to space, her cheek resting on her hand, looking as though she is lost in reflection and unaware of the encroaching bouquet of Chrysanthemums. Directional Forces utilized are using the implied lines for the viewerââ¬â¢s eye to follow the beautiful colors throughout the painting. Also, another way the artist utilized elements with the principles would be through Contrast. The difference between the artistââ¬â¢s use of light and dark throughout his painting. In describing how Degas organized the elements with the principles of design, Repetition and Rhythm with the vivid colors of the flowers flow through and gives the composition unity. Moving along describing the organized elements with the principles of design, scale and proportion, in which the figure of the woman compared to the enormous still life. Degas was influenced by the Impressionist during his time, and also he had formed some friendships. Most importantly Edgar Degas was highly influenced by the Japanese prints and photography. He also carried over the Japanese influence and used the symbolic flower of Japan, once known as The Land of Chrysanthemums in his paintings. Furthermore, Degas created many daring compositional innovations. His study of Japanese prints led him to experiment with unusual visual lines and asymmetrical compositions. His subjects would often seem cropped at the edges, or seemed to appear to be accidental cutoff views and off-centered subjects, as in Woman with Chrysanthemums. Moreover, Degasââ¬â¢s content and meaning of the selection was the woman in the painting staring off into space, her cheek resting on her hand, lost in deep thought unaware of the dominating bouquet of Chrysanthemums. In conclusion, Edgar Degasââ¬â¢s painting of ââ¬Å"Woman with Chrysanthemumsâ⬠was chosen because of its unusual and unique composition. Also, the unusually unbalanced painting made curiosity prevail. The asymmetrical principle of design and accidental cutoff views were intriguing as to why Edgar Degas painted as he once did long ago. Personally liking Chrysanthemums and beautiful bouquets of flowers made the painting easy to choose for the essay. Edgar Degas truly was both a man and an artist of contradictions. West Side Story Movie Critique Essay Example For Students
West Side Story Movie Critique Essay West Side Story is a contemporary rendition of Shakespeares classic, Romeo and Juliet. Set in the late 1950s in the west side of New York, gang rivalry and love story all in one. To todays standards these two gangs are more likely to be compared to a chess club than a gang. The two rival gangs are comprised of descendants of European immigrants (Jets), and the other Puerto Rican (Sharks). The element of racism is very apparent, but it is the underlying racism/ racial stereotypes and gendering in this film that influence an unsuspecting audience. In the first scene the two gangs have contrasting racial and physical qualities. Most of the Jets are blonde, strong and healthy. Where as the Sharks are all dark haired and dark skinned, the white Americans speak first in most of the scenes, making derogatory remarks about the Puerto Ricans. In the first scene when the police show up the Puerto Ricans are ordered to leave. The police officer wishes to only speak with the Jets. The office making the following statement Get your friends out of here, Bernardo, and stay out! Please! Boy, oh, boy. We will write a custom essay on West Side Story Movie Critique specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now As if this neighborhood wasnt crummy enough. Its as if the police dont have the time or the energy to deal with the Puerto Ricans, they are not worth their time. Not only is there racism in the movie there is also gendering. Women are seen as housewives that belong in the home, cooking, cleaning, and taking care of the children. When Anybody a white female begs to join the Jets she is told to go home the streets are no place for a woman. Some of the Jets taunt her that no one would want to sleep with her, to them a a womens status resides only in her beauty. The women are present during the fight scenes, to watch and cheer on the men, but they are not good enough to fight alongside them. Anita reinforces the feisty sexually charged latino stereotype. She sings about how shes gonna get her kicks and have a private little mix with her boyfriend Bernardo in Tonight. Throughout the movie she tries to protect her best friend Maria and expresses her worry about Maria dating Tony. The Jets seem to look at women as nothing more than objects, and Tony is a Jet. Maria begs Anita to bring Tony a message at Docs candy store. When she arrives she is taunted and encounters violence at the hands of the Jets. If Doc had not stepped out would Anita have been raped or were they just taunting her? This scene just reinforces the role of women in the eyes of the Jets. Between the two gangs a confrontation transpires, the Jets are looking to maintain their territory and social status, The Jets are not willing to give it up. The Jets prepare for a war/rumble. We fought hard for this turf and we aint just going to give it up. These PRs are different. They keep on coming like cockroaches. It has been years since I originally watched this movie, and I was probably 15. I watched it with the innocence of a 15 year old in 1995. Watching this movie again 19 years later I was surprised. I know that it has always been a rivalry between gangs, but I never actually stopped to look at the racism or gendering within this movie. Not only is there blatant racism there were subtle moments of racism for instance Natalie Wood who plays Maria is not even Puerto Rican. The girl who played Anita her best friend could have easily played the lead role. She in my opinion is a far better actress. .u1c5ad283cba60888fa62dcd101b26919 , .u1c5ad283cba60888fa62dcd101b26919 .postImageUrl , .u1c5ad283cba60888fa62dcd101b26919 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u1c5ad283cba60888fa62dcd101b26919 , .u1c5ad283cba60888fa62dcd101b26919:hover , .u1c5ad283cba60888fa62dcd101b26919:visited , .u1c5ad283cba60888fa62dcd101b26919:active { border:0!important; } .u1c5ad283cba60888fa62dcd101b26919 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u1c5ad283cba60888fa62dcd101b26919 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u1c5ad283cba60888fa62dcd101b26919:active , .u1c5ad283cba60888fa62dcd101b26919:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u1c5ad283cba60888fa62dcd101b26919 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u1c5ad283cba60888fa62dcd101b26919 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u1c5ad283cba60888fa62dcd101b26919 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u1c5ad283cba60888fa62dcd101b26919 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u1c5ad283cba60888fa62dcd101b26919:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u1c5ad283cba60888fa62dcd101b26919 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u1c5ad283cba60888fa62dcd101b26919 .u1c5ad283cba60888fa62dcd101b26919-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u1c5ad283cba60888fa62dcd101b26919:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Animated television series EssayBesides for the racism, I really enjoyed this movie again 19 years later. The acting could have been a little more convincing, but with the great dance scenes who needs acting! Overall this is a timeless film about the struggles of young immigrants in a harsh white neighborhood and lets not forget the love story. Under all this ugliness there is a beautiful love story, two innocent and unsuspecting kids fall hopelessly in love with the one person they are supposed to hate. They look past all the hideous features their friends and family see and plan to run away and be happy together.

Free Essays on Dont Ban Cloning
Donââ¬â¢t Ban Cloning Today, the topic of cloning generates more argument then it has ever created before. The controversy over cloning is based, in part on the fact that there are extreme opposing viewpoints on the subject. Also a major factoring the debate over cloning is a fear of new technology. Throughout history, man has always been slow to adapt to a new technology. We go through all the trouble to adapt to one method, why uproot ourselves and change everything just to do it a different way. This attitude has been evident in the recent past, with inventions such as the automobile and television. Nuclear power is a prime example of an advanced technology abandoned out of fear. There are very few nuclear power plants left in operation, and there are no new plants being built. This is mainly due to fear of an accident, or to the long lasting effects of this technology. As with everything, including cloning, there is a negative side. With television, the negative is that children often watch it instead of doing homework, subsequently causing lower grades. It is also believed that television violence influences children into more violent tendencies. A negative to automobiles is the massive pollution a large number of them cause. Entire cities have been put on pollution alert due to toxic smog created, in part by the automobile. Using PHP to Display Random Quotes
Using PHP to Display Random Quotes One way to add a random quote to your website is to use the PHP switch () statement. The switch statement compares one variable with many values and executes one piece of code depending on the value it equals. This allows you to prepare a list of quotations and then use the rand () function to select a number randomly that corresponds to one of the quotations.à Using Switch to Display Random Quotes This example code demonstrates how to use switch () to display a random quote on your website. Each of the sample quotes is set to run whenà its number is chosen. By using rand () to choose a random number, one of the quotes is displayed at random. This example accommodates only six quotations, hence the rand (1,6) entry.à } ? To add more quotes, you change the rand () function to allow for higher numbers and then add in their corresponding cases in the code. If you want to include a random quote on your PHP web page, use include () to pull the quote from this file, like this: INCLUDE yoursite.com/path/to/quote_file.php
